Question:
Is 0W-40 Motor Oil Suitable for Use in Hot Climates?
Hi, I notice that Mobil 1 0W-40 is recommended for both of my vehicles: a 2000 Mercedes S430 & a 2004 Range Rover. I live in Phoenix, AZ, and obviously with higher temperatures all year round than normal. Would it be more sensible to select a higher viscosity oil for this region especially with both vehicles having about 75K miles? What would be next to 0W-40 on the chart with higher viscosity? Thanks Declan
-- Declan Murphy, Phoenix, AZ
Answer:
Mobil 1 0W-40 is designed to provide protection at elevated temperatures, as well as provide exceptional very low temperature performance. From a viscosity standpoint, Mobil 1 5W-50 would be higher in viscosity than Mobil 1 0W-40.  Given the mileage of your vehicle, Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W-40 may be a more appropriate choice, given your Mercedes' SAE 40 viscosity requirement.  As always, please consult your owner's manual for the appropriate viscosity grade recommended for your vehicle.
