Question:
Difference Between API SH and SJ Standards
What is the difference between SH and SJ oil? Can SJ be used in place of SH?
-- Joe McDonald, Buffalo, NY
Answer:
API SJ quality engine oils are designed to be backwards-compatible with the earlier category engine oils, in this case, API SH.  API SJ quality oils are designed for 2001 and older automotive engines, while API SH is now an obsolete category.
