Question:
Is Mobil 1 Synthetic Grease Suitable as a Boat Wheel Bearing Grease?
I'm interested in changing my boat wheel bearing grease from the Sta-Lube Marine grease to Mobil 1 Synthetic Grease. Two questions: 1) will Mobil 1 mix with the Sta-Lube without any reaction, and 2) is Mobil 1 Synthetic Grease appropriate for use as a boat bearing grease (given the constant full immersion of the axles) and use of disc brakes on all four wheels? Thanks

Answer:
First, you don't want to mix greases so clean out the old Sta-Lube grease completely.  Mobil 1 Synthetic Grease would make a very good boat trailer wheel bearing grease. The rpm of the boat trailer would be a good match for the ISO 220 base oil viscosity, and the Anti-Wear/ Extreme Pressure Additive Package will help with the rib/roller contact in the tapered roller bearings probably used in the trailer. It also has great water resistance and rust protection.  If immersed frequently, it's always a smart practice to regrease a little when the trailer gets back in the garage and is ready to sit idle for a while until the next trip. This ensures any water intrusion will get displaced from the bearing, and spread a fresh coat of rust inhibitor for protection while sitting idle. Note if this includes salt water immersion, regreasing even more regularly becomes very critical as salt water is very corrosive even for good rust-inhibited greases. For the disc brakes, we recommend you use a disc brake grease.
