Question:
Is 5 Quarts of Makeup Motor Oil Excessive?
I own a VW PASSAT 2007. My problem is I go through oil (using Castrol Synthetic as recommended) at least a quart every 1000 miles or less. VW tells me it's not unusual to use a quart of oil every 1200 miles. I have owned many cars before this one, and have never used more than a quart between oil changes every 5000 miles. I would appreciate your take on this, and is there any product of yours that can help this situation? As of now with 29M miles on the car I go through a 5-quart oil change plus at least 5 more quarts of oil till next oil change. Would appreciate your input. Thanks Larry.

Answer:
Five quarts between oil changes is excessive. Oil consumption varies widely for vehicles and certain vehicles consume more oil than others even within the same car brand and model. This oil consumption may also be impacted by oil quality and viscosity grade as well as vehicle miles. In your case, you may have other factors such as a leak that should be checked by a mechanic. You may also want to check the Internet and see if other owners are seeing the same issue.
