Question:
What Lubricant is Best for Transmission Syncros
Hi, I just purchased and had a 1995 Aisin AX-15 rebuilt to put in my Jeep Wrangler. The Transmission shop said to run 10W-30 motor; they said synthetics were too slick and would not allow the syncros to operate properly. I have read numerous web postings, many of them say they used to run Mobil 1 synthetic in their AX-15 because it was GL-3 rated.  Now they say it is rated for GL-5 and have stopped using it. Their reasoning is the GL-5 has deposits in it that are harmful to the syncros in the AX-15, that this oil is intended for the NV-3500, 4500s that use a different type of syncro that requires the additives to operate smoothly. I am confused on what lube to use. What Mobil 1 product do you recommend that will provide me with the best service and protection? I live in Texas where it is hot much of the year. Thank you.

Answer:
According to our information, the 1995 Aisin AX-15 requires a GL-5 75W-90- gear oil. Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS 75W-90 would be a good choice.
