Has Mobil 1 Lost its Endorsement for the Mercedes-Benz C Class?
I recently purchased a 2005 Mercedes C230 Sport sedan with 6 speed manual transmission. The owner's manual states Mobil 1 as oil of choice. I spoke with a service shop today seeking a local shop to work with for regular maintenance. When the topic of oil came up he said Mobil 1 is no longer recommended by Mercedes! -- this due to constantly changing manufacturer requirements, the Mobil 1 formulated in 2005 isn't the same as what is on the shelf today! I'm confused as the car has 100,000+ miles using Mobil 1. Is the advice I'm getting valid and should I keep looking for a local shop instead of changing my brand of oil? The previous owner was very religious in changing the oil on a regular basis without fail and didn't use the extended change intervals. I just want to continue with good maintenance and actually have access to a lift and facility to perform the maintenance myself if a credible shop is not found. Thanks for your advice and help!

Mobil 1 (ESP Formula M 5W-40 or 0W-40) remains the recommended oil for gasoline-fueled, Mercedes-Benz cars in the U.S., and you absolutely should continue using Mobil 1.  Regarding your inquiry on formulation changes, as you are aware, we periodically upgrade formulation(s) to ensure that Mobil 1 continues to meet or exceed the latest Industry and OEM specifications. You should be assured that Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 and Mobil 1 0W-40 both are approved (and will continue to be approved) against the latest MB passenger car (gasoline-fueled) engine oil specification, which currently is MB 229.5.
