Does Black Motor Oil Indicate Need for Shortened Oil Intervals?
I've been a constant user of Mobil 1 for the last 8+ years. First started using Mobil 1 on my 2002 Nissan Xterra with the supercharged 3.3 liter motor.  Now I currently use it on my 2008 Nissan Frontier with the 4.0L motor. Change my oil at 3,000 miles, It comes out very black on either vehicle. Cannot believe it would last another 12,000 miles to 15K. Can you please explain to me why I am seeing this oil so black and whether it is a reasonable expectation to see this oil last for another 12K miles?
-- Russell Jones, Green Cove Springs, FL
Since one of the key engine oil tasks is to keep internal components clean and free from varnish and harmful deposits, when the oil is drained, the contaminants are removed with it, so it is normal for the oil to be black as it comes out of the engine and it may still conserve its properties even if the color of the oil is black. Please refer to your owner's manual for the recommended oil change interval. With Mobil 1´s high-performance reserves, you can have the confidence to go the full mileage or time frame recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
