Question:
Is it Okay to Ignore the Oil Change Reminder when Using Oils with Extended Drains?
I switched to Mobil 1 extended service oil in my 2002 Silverado and was expecting to extend the service interval. The change oil message came on at about 3,500 miles, the same as the standard oil. Is it safe to ignore the message?

Answer:
The oil change sensor in your vehicle is measuring certain operational parameters which, based on the 3,500-mile recommendation, indicates operation under severe service.  The sensor system does not know what kind of oil you are using or what quality of oil.  Without knowing the specifics of your vehicle service, it is difficult to recommend a specific oil change interval.  For example, do you use the vehicle for towing or hauling?
