Question:
Does Too Fine of Filtration Filter Out Oil Additives?
Can too fine a filtration, as in 3 to 5 micron, cause damage by filtering out some important additives in Mobil 1™ or conventional oils?
-- Paul Purdy, Chambersburg, PA
Answer:
Filtration at 3- 5 microns is approaching the critical limit for certain engine oil additive components. For example, anti-foamant is added to the oil to prevent foaming; this molecule is physically suspended and could be removed from the oil. In addition, other molecules could agglomerate and bind together, and possibly be filtered out at this low micron level. For engines with fairly large clearances, filtration below 10 - 25 microns is unnecessary in most applications.
