Question:
Oil Pressure After Switching to Synthetic Motor Oil in a High-Mileage SUV
I have a 1999 Chevy Silverado 4x4 with a 5.7 Vortec. It has 164,000 miles on it and I just began putting Mobil 1 in it after I purchased it a few days ago . I noticed the oil pressure is hanging around 40 but dropping to around 30 at idle. Is this something I should worry about or is this normal? I have seen it as high as 60 since adding Mobil 1 so I am a little worried.
-- David Smithhart, Lampasas, TX
Answer:
Oil pressure will vary somewhat depending oil type and viscosity grade. There will also be some oil pressure change versus engine speed, which is not unusual. We do not think you have an issue to worry about but check with your mechanic to be sure.
