 | | Question: | | Should Filters be Changed Mid-way Through Extended Oil Drains? | | We drive a 1988 Buick LeSabre with a 3.8L. Aside from some lifter noise, it runs perfectly. Should I keep using Mobil 1 10-30 or switch to a different viscosity to improve mpg? Also, should I use a premium oil filter if we drive extended periods between oil & filter changes? What about changing out filters half way through an oil change cycle? Would that help? | | -- Jerry Deibert, La Mesa, CA | | | Answer: | We recommend switching to Mobil 1 0W-30 Advanced Fuel Economy to get higher gas mileage and save a few bucks. (Actual savings are dependent upon vehicle/engine type, outside temperature, driving conditions and your current engine oil viscosity.) If you would like to extend the oil change intervals, you can switch to Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10W-30. There is no need to use a special filter in either case, but for more information on recommended filters, please visit What's the Right Oil for My Car?. A link to the filter models for your vehicle is displayed after the oil recommendation. Mobil 1 Extended Performance filters are an outstanding filter to consider for higher efficiency and capacity. Changing your filter half way through the oil change cycle is probably unnecessary if you are using a high quality filter.
