Question:
Using Synthetic ATF in a Toyota Transmission
I notice that both Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF and your non-synthetic ATF say they meet Toyota Type T-IV standards. I asked Lexus about switching to synthetic fluid for my 2002 RX 300 and they say absolutely not. It may damage my transmission. Who is right, you or them?
-- Bruce Sanders, Buffalo, NY
Answer:
ExxonMobil stands behind its automatic transmission fluids, and both Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF and Mobil Multi-Vehicle ATF are suitable for use in Toyota applications where Toyota T-IV type product is recommended. However, the Toyota/Lexus ATF is specifically designed for those vehicles and will provide optimum performance. It is difficult to say whether you would ever feel or see the difference in performance, but the Mobil products will not damage your transmission.
