This car was my father's until he passed away suddenly in 2003. It is my prized possession and has carried me to family funerals in Kentucky, vacations in Niagara Falls and Quebec, Canada, and once made the 1,900 mile round trip to Georgia with only two fuel stops. Even now, at 10 years old, I have no plans to replace the car as my daily driver. The diesel rumble and turbo whine are still music to my ears.
My father began using Mobil Delvac 1 when even the VW dealers couldn't locate an oil with the proper approvals. Delvac was the choice of the on-line VW community so that's what he used even though it was tough to find. I have since changed to Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 but went to Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 for my last change. The slightly thinner oil seems to give smoother starts and quicker turbo spool, and has netted me an honest 5% mpg boost, to about 44. Others get better mileage, but I have a lead foot.
Mobil 1 helps me sleep better at night because this car is part of the family and I intend to keep it a good long time.
