We traveled 28,000 miles -- nearly two-thirds of our 41,000-mile journey -- before changing the engine oil. The 28,000-mile performance interval far exceeded any typical oil change interval, especially under the grueling temperature and driving conditions that we faced. We changed the motor oil at this interval because we determined that our oil had taken on a high silicate content due to all of the dust we had encountered which could have caused engine and oil deterioration. We saw more dust in a day than most cars see in a year.
