In the United States, the Industry Performance Standard known as ILSAC GF-5 consists of a series of tests, which focus primarily on engine cleanliness, wear protection, emission system protection, and fuel economy. The ILSAC GF-5 standard is designed to ensure a motor oil will deliver the proper level of protection when used at recommended oil drain intervals. Similar tests are conducted to meet the ACEA European Performance Standards.
