Question:
Use of Mobil 1 Extended Performance in a Chevrolet TrailBlazer SS
Okay, I can accept the fact that I messed up, the real question is "how bad is it?" I just dumped 6 quarts of Mobil 1 Extended Performance in my Chevrolet Trailblazer SS - at 500 clock miles. The book calls for GM4718 approval, and I mistakenly thought that since Mobil 1 (5W-30) had that approval, the Mobil 1 Extended Performance (5W-30) also had the approval. Not so.....according to the bottle and the web site. I plan to run the oil for 1000 miles and then change it again (I'm still breaking it in). I will not be pulling anything, and I will keep a max engine speed of 2500 RPM for the trek from 500 to 1500 miles. What am I doing to my engine by not putting the proper approved oil in it for the next 1000 miles?

Answer:
Although we strongly recommend that consumers use the quality and type of oil specified by their car builder, you are not running any risk by using Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W-30 in your Trailblazer SS, which calls for a GM 4718M-approved oil. With that said, we agree that you should return to using Mobil 1 5W-30, which is approved against GM 4718M, on your next oil change.
